MPHO - Box N Locks

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDfLBY6PJrQ

Someone ripped off Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins. UK hip hop singer MPHO catches my attention with this catchy cut.

Army Navy - Saints

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT3-2TpGww4

Great summery indie-guitar pop song from this american californian band, Army Navy. Taken from their self-titled album. Someone described them as a combination of the sounds of Posies, Dinosaur jr, James, and Radiohead. Not sure how they got there but I think they sound more like Cast with this track.

The Dead Weather Treat Me Like Your Mother

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QSkI6My1g

Huge fan of the Kills. Luke Warm to the Whipe Stripes. And that's what this song basically is; Alison Mosshart's vocals over the Jack White's music. Video is alittle dull too. I'll let you give your own opinion.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK4SUof_yv8

New single from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs taken from their thrid album It's Blitz. Very nu rave sounding but Karen O makes it work with her angelic like vocals. Average Passion Pit remixes of this track floating around too.

Click on the link above for the hollywood glitzed up video on Youtube featuring a Michael Jackson dancing Werewolf.

Nina Gordon / Richard Cheese (covers)

Videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6D5xpCgETk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb6W-h5j3jM

Today we're going to look at two covers of songs in which the style of the original song has been completely reinterpreted, with the original music videos in the background.

First up, we've got Nina Gordon covering NWA's 'Straight Outta Compton', taking a song first sung by a bunch of fired-up black rappers from Los Angeles and letting a blonde, Jewish girl from the Midwest turn it into a sweet ode about popping caps in people's asses. I've loved this cover since I first heard it.

Next, we've got Richard Cheese covering System of a Down's 'Chop Suey!', in which the hard rock from the Armenian-American band is given a lounge-style spin. Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine specialise in covering songs from acts as diverse as Nirvana through to Snoop Dogg, all of course in the lounge style.

Bombay Bicycle Club - Dust on the Ground

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auN1D_nkb3w

Third single from indie rockers Bombay Bicycle Club. The indie half brothers of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Taken from the first album I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose on Island Records. Album hit number 46 in first week out in the UK but deserved higher. The first single Always Like This was great too (check out this blog April 13 for the review)

White Lies - Death

Video Original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTh9IuSTOY0
Video Crystal Castles Version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1snBKO0bKV8

Of course....typical trick of the Major Label Record Shop. Release the first single. Build The hype. Release more singles and the album. Then re-release the single aprrox a year afterwards with new video and extra remixes. Thats what Universal does here with Death being re-released in the UK and new Crystal Castles remixes floating around. I'll stick with the original but the CC remix is not bad.

Universal won't let me embed so you need to click on the youtube links above.

Wilco - Bull Black Nova

Moby - Pale Horses

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFsvKcWnee0

What the world needs is another Moby single. This is actually not a bad single and is off his forthcoming new album called Wait For Me which should be out now. Very downtempoish. Vocals are Amelia Zirin Brown(who?) who is a friend of Mobys.

Dirty Projectors / Anni Rossi

1. Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is The Move

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMPF6lpM0XM

I'm convinced this is what Indie RnB would be if there was such a thing of indie RnB. Very good track though off the Domino Record Label who really don't ever fail with their releases. The Dirty Projectors is Dave Longstreth accompanied by a shifting cast of band members. This is his first album for Domino Records although there has been many records. This is the first single from Bitte Orca.

2. Anni Rossi - The West Coast
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzKlutR0ve8

This is a grower off 4AD by Anni Rossi. Nice track from her album Rockwell. Anni just recently opened up for labelmates Camera Obscura here in Toronto at Lee's Palace on June 27. You can read a review of her show at our Sister blog Panic Manual right here. Although Panic Manual didn't take to well to the show the single below definately does have some good qualities and has inspired me to track down the full length.

Freemasons & Sophie Ellis-Bextor / Basement Jaxx

Two Club tracks for Saturday

1. Freemasons & Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Heartbreak Make Me a Dancer

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1wnAaIVvcs

Great new club track from the Freemasons and featuring the vocals of Sophie Ellis-Bextor (The Audience). Epic slow trotting house-trance track. This one is off Loaded records. Nice video of Sophie but no real plot to the video.

2. Basement Jaxx -Raindrops

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdtewwXmb1M

First single taken from the new album Scars due out in September. Nice track but when do Basement Jaxx ever fail. Sorta chanelling MGMT for this one. Not sure how long the video will be available as it has adult content and is being banned. Check it out below. Otherwise click on the above link for a non video audio youtube track.

La Roux - Bulletproof

Catchy retro electro cut that stormed to number 1 on the UK charts. How, I'm not sure. Good track? Yes. Incredible track? No. I'll let you judge. This is the third single taken from the self titled debut album by this British synthpop duo. Check out what our sister blog Panic Manual is saying about La Roux right now right here. Or check out the mini review of the second single by us earlier this year here.

To see the video click on the Youtube link below (alas the majors won't let us bloggers embed their videos these days (not sure why): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOYufRHQSms

Fleet Foxes - Your Protector / Jarvis Cocker - Angela

Fleet Foxes - Your Protector

Video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O52raYzXvk

Brand new single from their spectacular full length self titled album. This is on Bella Union Records. No video as of yet to go with this 7 Inch. Just a fan made video below

And while we are at it lets see what Jarvis is all on about:

Jarvis Cocker - Angela

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbNh4CS9Cns

Taken from his latest solo album Further Complications I think Jarvis is pulling a Nick Cave on us here. This album was released in May and disappeared just as quick. Not to say the album is bad as I have not heard it myself. This was the first single from the album and isn't bad. Again very Nick Cavish music wise in my opinion.

Bat For Lashes / Florence + The Machine Double UP Wednesday

First Off....Happy Canada Day.

Bat For Lashes - Pearl's Dream

Brand new single from the fantastic new album Two Suns. This single definately makes me think Kate Bush. Nice track. Unfortunately Parlophone won't let me embed so you will need to click on the youtube link below for the video

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jfxm4ywN4s

Florence + The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)

A new single from this act from their album Lungs. Very nice and in the same vein as Bat For Lashes. Universal Music is the culprit this time and alas you will need to click on the youtube link below for the video

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHqbco0zHWo
