The Notwist - One With the Freaks/This Room

Josh has been hitting us with a cascade of excellent new releases, so I'm going to take the chance to look at a German indie rock band you may not have heard of, even though they have existed for 20 years!

White Lies - Farewell To The Fairground

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ0AFriC7ZM

Did Jason Keller (Now Magazine March 26-April 1) and Nino Gheciu (Eye Magazine March 26-April 1) miss the point with their reviews of the White Lies full length release To Lose My Life? Well they do come about 4 months after the release of the album but alas when you live by the Canadian record company dropping you promos you die by the Canadian record company dropping you promos. Not sure why they are both going on about Joy Division either?

This is the 4th single from the band....very catchy eighties like alternative track. Check out their great track Death which we reviewed on IKvsDK on September 27th of last year.

The band stop by Lee's Palace in Toronto on March 31. Unfortunately the record company won't let me embed the video so please click here for the Youtube video:

Camera Obscura - French Navy

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH9n8LVY0vs

Brand new track from Camera Obscura off their fourth album My Maudlin Career out in April on 4AD. A quirky story of failed romance. Camra Obscura stick with the usual formula and once again win out. Camera Obscura hits Lee's Palace in Toronto on June 27 as part of their North American tour.

Steve Angello & Laidback Luke Ft Robin S - Show Me Love

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUQ1LRGcVgs

When its a classic dance track you can expect it to be remixed and released multiple times. Here it is, the fourth time its been released on the big dance imprint out of the UK Data. Originally released in 1992 and massive in the clubs this track has since been remixed in 1997, 2002, and now in 2009. Fantastic track although I am partial to the original mix. Uses a driving Felix Da Housecat type banging pipe sound in the background. Well remixed for our current time period.

Oh Canada! Metric, Hot Hot Heat, Broken Social Scene

Big thanks to Josh for providing me with a warm welcome to IDKD. I know Josh through my brother, who has my undying respect for naming Joy Division as his favourite band of all time. If you don't know much about Josh, here's a fact -- he bleeds music. I imagine if you cut him it would sound something like the Smiths but I have never dared to find out (I also imagine Josh would get quite angry if you tried to cut him).

Anyhow I've decided to look back across the pond at three Canadian artists that have new albums coming out soon.

Metric - Help I'm Alive

First up we've got the new single from Metric from their upcoming album Fantasies. Their guitar-driven indie rock and Emily Haines's distinctive voice makes for a great sound. If their last two albums are anything to go by, expect another strong album from them.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtA7YIFapnY

Hot Hot Heat - Let Me In

British Columbia's Hot Hot Heat burst onto the scene with their first full-length release Make Up the Breakdown. Since then they have developed their sound and are set to release a new album this calendar year. The video here is taken from their most recent album Happiness Ltd.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRi5LF1cQgQ

Broken Social Scene

Okay... slight cheat here, I don't think Broken Social Scene have an album coming out soon... but this is a fun video. Broken Social Scene are a Canadian music collective comprising members from various bands (including Stars, Metric and Do Make Say Think).

The Old Guard - Oasis, Starsailor, Pete Doherty

Just want to make an official welcome to Dunstan who has recently joined Indie Kid Vs Dance Kid as our British Correspondent. Dunstan is notorious for having been a roadie back in the day for British bands such as The Verve, Sleeper, and Gene.

In recognition of our new writer I go old skool with 3 well known UK bands/singers with new singles out just recently:

Starsailor - Tell Me Its Not Over

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqH-RoDXKLU

Epic keyboard, soaring melodies, nineties britpop revisited with Starsailor's first single off their newest and fourth album All The Plans.

Oasis - Falling Down

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEzmU7YSXJs

Brand new single by Oasis. I've sorta fell out of touch with this band after Morning Glory but this single is a catchy one. This is the third single from their 7th album called Dig Out Your Soul. 7 albums...WOW....Didn't realize they had put out so many.

Pete Doherty - Last Of The English Roses

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjIO-AJlFoU

Fantastic solo single from former Libertines member Pete Doherty. Downtempo Big Audio Dynamite/Clash type of track taken from the forthcoming full length 'Grace / Wastelands'. Believe the Hype....this is fantastic and trumps Oasis and Starsailor easily.

Bon Iver - Flume

Mellow track recommended to us by Sarah, a regular user of IDKD and our 'unofficial' US correspondent. Like Sarah, Bon Iver hails from the Badger State. Unlike Sarah, he has a lot of facial hair. Enjoy.

Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone

One for the dance kids. You might know Calvin Harris better from his collaborations with Kylie Minogue (he recorded on her recent X album) and Dizzee Rascal (on the single Dance Wiv Me). This is the first single to be released from his second studio album.

4AD Tuesday Big Pink, It Hugs Back

4AD......one of the best record labels of all time....if not the best. Two bands from the roster with new singles. Check em out:

Big Pink - Velvet

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_5RA-AapMo

Wow....what a single....don't know anything about this band other than they are on 4AD. A number of videos are floating around Youtube and I haven't heard anything bad. This 7 Inch is out in April.

It Hugs Back - Now And Again

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf5meA77meg

Low-fi single from It Hugs Back......nice chill sweet indiepop track. Perfect to fall asleep too.

Monday Double Shot of Jangily indiepop

1) Skint & Demoralised - This Song Is Definitely Not About You

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbcG636Gdko

Nice jangily pop song from this UK band. Love, And Other Catastrophes... their first album is due out in May. This is their second single (we reviewed the first on November 21 of last year). Unfortunately Mercury won't let me embed the video so you will need to click on the youtube link above.

2) door cinema club-something good can work

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZngQxPpW8g

Catchy track from this young Irish band released on 7 inch. Hard to believe they haven't been signed to a major yet. This reads hit single all over it.

The Ditty Bops - Walk or Ride

I have been informed that it is International Women's Day today, so how about a song from a couple of musically talented ladies from California. The Ditty Bops once cycled from Los Angeles to New York City in 2006 to promote their second album in an environmentally friendly way. You can read about their journey here, I would recommend it if you are particularly excited by long blogs: http://www.thedittybopsbiketour.blogspot.com/

Saturday Triple Pack Ladytron, Ladyhawke, Saturdays

Lots of things to review these days. The music business is starting to pick up after a slow January and February. We look at 3 well established artists with new tracks out this past week in the UK.

Ladytron - Tomorrow

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_BSfkTFQ4M

Back from where we started. Our first post back in 2007 was Ladytron's smash Destroy Everything You Touch. This is the third single I believe off Ladytron's latest album Velocifero. A nice melodic tune with supernatural jellyfish video. Currently rumoured to be touring with Depeche Mode this summer.

Ladyhawke - Paris Is Burning

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1HDZNR9cY4

Not a new single as we reviewed this in July of last year but the UK record company re-issue the single once again in new packaging. Fantastic track from this New Zealander which deserves to be re-mentioned. Off one of my favourite albums last year, the debut self-titled album Ladyhawke.

Satrudays - Just Can't Get Enough

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vte4HUoRDSI

The ladies provide us with their campy reworking of the classic Depeche Mode club/eighties track Just Can't Get Enough and it actually works. All the proceeds from the sales on this record go to charity through the Comic Relief fund in the UK.
All the singles from this outfit have gone top 10 in the UK in sales and this track is their most popular to date going to number 2.

Join The BPA

Interesting contest being offered by Norman Cook and the crew. He wants your vocals on the following song. Not sure what the prize is but sounds like fun. Check out the track below on the BPA Promotional Video around this contest on Youtube. This is all in the spirit of promoting the new BPA album Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat

Disconcerts- Human Figure in Motion

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXPnoDUFPZ4

First single from the Disconcerts out of the UK. Very old skool alternative type track that could have come out of the mid-eighties. This is the first single for the band available on 7 Inch or Digital Download. Think PIL or The Fall. Can't say much more than that. Wicked track.

CocknBullKid - I'm Not Sorry

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNC3zHFeShg

Fantastic new single from CockNBullKid released on MoshiMoshi Records. Supposedly there is a full length record on the way. Electropop music. We reviewed another wicked single by the band on July 20, 2008 if interested in more. The Kid is based out of the UK.

Electrelane - Gone Under Sea

British indie rock from Brighton, sung in French.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E6s6Dz-6YM

Max Pashm - Manea-k

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x4LEPh79as (warning: may load slowly -- if so try the MySpace)

MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/maxpashm

With an album cover and title that clearly gives a nod to a certain album by the Sex Pistols, here's something a little bit different for Tuesday. Max Pashm describes his music as KlezmerBalkanGreekGypsyPunk with Electro-beats. He has created a world music fusion that is almost certain to make you want to stand up and dance. The song is about 4:50 minutes long so don't be fooled by the 8 minute video. Enjoy the beats.

Lissy Trullie - Boy Boy

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt6CGCp_ZEc

Sweet Indie Rock!!! Fantastic cut from this New York Outfit and taken from their Self-Taught Learner EP. Makes me think of a cleaner Jesus and The Mary Chain.

The Hermit Crabs - Correspondence Course

Some very good indie twee from this Scottish band off the Matinee Records label. This is the bands second ep for the label and the title track features lyrics mentioning Lynard Skynard and This Mortal Coil in the same line. fantastic. Very Camera Obscura country/twee like sound. Check out the track on their website below as there is no official video for the song:
